Sinn Féin MLA Caitríona Ruane has encouraged people to attend the Belfast Pride Festival parade on Saturday.

Speaking ahead of the parade through the city centre, Ms Ruane said;

"The annual Belfast Pride parade is a wonderful occasion that has become a real fixture in the city's calendar.

"It is a fantastic celebration of equality, diversity and tolerance.

"The lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community make a huge contribution to our society and the Belfast Pride Festival includes a wide range of events recognising that as well as raising awareness of many important issues

"Sadly, there are still homophobia in our society and the Pride festival offers everyone a chance to stand in solidarity with the LGBT community and show our rejection of such narrow-mindedness.

"I would encourage as many people as possible to come along and a take part in the parade which will begin at Custom Square at 2pm on Saturday."

Sinn Féin Justice and Equality Spokesperson, Pádraig Mac Lochlainn TD, today launched the party’s LGBT rights document, Equality, Diversity, Solidarity – Fighting with PRIDE for LGBT rights in Ireland, and outlined its commitment to LGBT equality in Ireland.

Speaking after the event, Deputy Mac Lochlainn said:

“Sinn Féin is an Irish republican party and equality is at the core of all that we represent.

“Nothing less than full equality of rights and opportunities under law for the LGBT community should be tolerated in a modern, progressive and inclusive society.

“Sinn Féin has and will continue to work in solidarity with the LGBT community to create positive change in our society that will activate public and political support for full equal rights.

He continued:

“Today, we have outlined 10 Proposals for LGBT equality that we believe will lead to a more tolerant, rights based and equal society.

“The right to marry is a key issue and one of huge significance so we again call on the Government to set a date in 2015 for a constitutional referendum on marriage equality.

“Among the proposals, Sinn Féin aims to tackle work place discrimination against the LGBT community by amending Section 37 of the Employment Equality Acts 1998-2011 to eliminate legalised discrimination against LGBT education and healthcare workers in the 26 Counties.

“My colleague, Jonathan O' Brien TD, Sinn Féin Education Spokesperson put forward a Private Members Bill last year seeking to achieve this goal.

“My party colleague Aengus O' Snodaigh TD launched a comprehensive Gender Recognitionin Bill last year. Our party seek to enable transgender citizens to acquire a birth certificate appropriate to their gender identity as the foundation for a wider suite of rights.

“It is pivotal to legislate north and south for equal treatment of prospective LGBT parents in reproductive and adoptive services, and in related social and other public services to ensure the law treats all children equally regardless of family status or the sexual orientation or gender identity of their parents.

“To combat homophobic and transphobic violence, bullying and abuse we would seek to introduce into criminal law a provision that makes committing an offence with a homophobic or transphobic motivation or aim an aggravating circumstance allowing for a more severe penalty and update the incitement to hatred laws to address the use of the internet and social media to promote homophobic and transphobic messages.

“It is important that all political parties work together on this issue as the promotion and implementation of legislative changes for the rights of LGBT citizens is an urgent requirement for an equal society.”

Sinn Féin officially launched their policy document on LGBT rights across the island of Ireland today, with party leader Gerry Adams noting that LGBT rights were at the heart of the political party’s republican values.

Party president Gerry Adams TD, Pádraig Mac Lochlainn TD, Cllr. Emma Murphy, and Mayor of South Dublin, Fintan Warfield, all spoke at the launch event for the document, Equality, Diversity, Solidarity – Fighting with Pride for LGBT Rights in Ireland, in Dublin this morning. Mr Adams spoke in both Irish and English about the progress made in terms of LGBT rights over the years in Ireland, but said that there were several challenges that still needed to be met.

At the top of Sinn Féin’s ten proposals for LGBT equality in Ireland, was the amendment of Section 37 of the Employment Equality Acts 1998-2011, which the party describes as ‘legalised homophobic and transphobic discrimination’. The party also calls for an exact date for the Government to announce the proposed referendum on same-sex marriage in the Republic, as well as amending the 1937 Constitution “to include express equality protections for LGBT citizens and equal treatment for all family forms”.

Transgender rights were also mentioned by the party leader, and by Pádraig Mac Lochlainn, stressing the need to introduce Gender Recognition legislation as soon as possible. The party also praised the work carried out by numerous LGBT groups, including GLEN, TENI and BeLonG To.

When asked by EILE Magazine how the party would face strong homophobic views when implementing their policies in Northern Ireland, Gerry Adams spoke warmly of how the first civil partnership in the UK or Ireland took place in Belfast, and that such a “historic moment” provided hope for LGBT rights in the region.

J. F. Mulligan: Too bad Sinn Fein’s support of LGBT rights doesn’t include Irish and Irish American queers in the United States. Lip service at home during the month of pride is lovely but when the same shower are in the U.S., participating in anti-gay Patrick’s Day parades and events we see Sinn Fein’s true colours of political opportunism, fundraising at any cost and no backbone to stand up against bigotry.
